Frequently Asked Questions

About Floor Removal

What do you mean by Essentially Dust-Free?

Obviously we can’t guarantee or promise a 100% dustless removal process; however, our system and process is capable of collecting around 1 pound of dust per sq. ft. when removing tile and stone flooring. So “Essentially” means, you can’t do any better with any other process or company. We do it right! We do it best!

How long will it take to remove my floors?

Typically, up to 1,200 square feet per day can be removed, depending on how it was installed.

Is the dust a health hazard?

Yes. In fact, it’s not just dust, it’s crystalline silica, a naturally occurring substance found in sand and stone. It is present in flooring products that are sourced from sand and stone, including tiles, glass, concrete and grout. Silica dust particles become trapped in lung tissue causing inflammation and scarring. The particles also reduce the lungs' ability to take in oxygen. This condition is called silicosis. Silicosis results in permanent lung damage and is a progressive, debilitating, and sometimes fatal disease. To prevent the airborne spread of silica we use a specialty vacuum system and HEPA filters that trap trap 99.97% of all airborne particles larger than 0.3 microns (0.001 mm, or about 0.000039 in.), making it perfect for silica dust removal. All of our specialty vacuums are OSHA Compliant for removal of Silica.

Do my baseboards and shoe mold always need to be removed?

If you don’t have plans to replace your baseboard, we can remove your flooring up to the baseboard. However, shoe mold or quarter round must be removed so that your new floors can be installed properly.

Do my cabinets need to be removed?

No. We protect the cabinets during the removal process and have many tools that cut or remove flooring up to the bottom of the cabinets so your new floor is installed properly.

Why is surface preparation for your new flooring so important?

Once the old flooring is removed, you are left with glue and other coatings from the previous flooring. To the naked eye, this coating can be difficult to see. However, if the new floor is installed on top of the old coating, this causes unlevel and uneven floors. FDM removes epoxy, glue, oils, dust, and more in order for your new flooring to look its best. Our floor preparation prevents new flooring from laying uneven and is done in homes, garages, businesses, and more. We use the industry’s most advanced equipment to ensure all materials are removed and your surface is left smooth.

Can I keep my old flooring and just go over the top of it with new flooring?

The quick answer is “yes” but we strongly recommended that you don’t consider this as an option. Why? 1) if your old flooring (especially tile or wood) starts to lose its bond with the subfloor, then you have a real problem on your hands. Both layers will have to be removed to remediate the problem. This could happen if moisture creeps in under your first layer of flooring, especially around exterior doorways or even from a slab leak. Sometimes for no reason, tiles lose their bond and start popping up. Should any of these scenarios arise, this could cost you much more in the long run than if you had just removed the old flooring in the beginning. 2) Two layers of flooring may require cutting down all your doors and jambs. Cutting these all down, is an extra cost. 3) Most installers will not warranty their installation if you request they go over an existing layer of flooring.

What do you do with the waste?

The waste is removed from your home or business in one of three ways: 1) we have our own dump trailer that we bring to the job site. In most cases, this is sufficient. 2) we order A 20-yard dumpster to be placed on your property (with your permission of course) or 3) in some counties, there is a service called Bagster

What preparations do I need to make before the FDM crew arrives to remove my floors?

Although we remove and put back all your furniture (unless you specify otherwise), we ask our customers to remove all the contents or personal items sitting on top of your furniture. We recommend removing all items in your pantry and closets. All valuable and breakable items sitting inside furniture like China cabinets, must be removed by the owner. We recommend you contact a vendor who specializes in moving pool tables and pianos as we are not trained in the unique set up and calibrations required for these items.
